A History of Modern Psychology Franklyn Rivas UOPX History and Systems in Psychology 310 Lillian Fillpot May 03, 2011 A History of Modern Psychology Before psychology officially became a science, many great intellectuals of previous centuries had contributed to the philosophy behind psychology. This philosophy can be trace back to the times of the Greeks, middle ages, and the renaissance period. However, the link between philosophy and modern psychology became possible in the late 18th and early 19th century. Between 18th and early 19th century there was a new enlightenment occurring in philosophy, and questions regarding human behavior, mind, and body were beginning to be studied through the eyes of science rather than from a†¦show more content†¦Furthermore, Mill introduced â€Å"methods of scientific investigations† (Goodwin, 2008, p. 1). Mills’ system of investigation â€Å"underlie the used of the modern-day experimental method of psychology†(Goodwin, 2008, p. 1). A third pioneer in the advancement of philosophy to psychology was David Hartley. David Hartley elabo rated on associations, and introduced the term psychophysical parallelism- stating that â€Å"psychological and physical events separately, but operating in parallel† (Goodwin, 2008, Chapter 2). He also made it clear that repetition was the underlying principle in creating strong associations, and that the key component to associations was contiguity, that is, events occurring together (Goodwin, 2008). Finally, Hartley introduced â€Å"vibrations† instead of sensations in describing how the nervous system works. The development of science of psychology during the late 19th and early 20th century came through the study of physiology during a period in which people used science and reason to combat ignorance (Goodwin, 2008). This period was called â€Å"Enlightenment.† And at this time science was seen as a heroic step toward truth. Although philosophers asked important questions, it was the physiologists that conducted critical experiments on the nervous system. The quest was to discover how the nervous system worked. Through this quest scientists could explore the many functions of the spinal cord.
